An auteur tries his hand at something different - with great success
I'M A CYBORG BUT THAT'S OK is an offbeat romantic comedy from manager Park-Chan Wook, the human being responsible for some of the darkest visions in modern cinema (OLDBOY and SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE to name merely two titles). Wook is one of my favourite directors since, well, ever, but I detest watching rom-coms. How would I fare with this pic? The answer is that I found it enjoyable, fifty-fifty if the material left me cold; at least information technology'southward something dissimilar. The motion-picture show begins in classic Wook territory, with a manufacturing plant worker discovering that she's a cyborg and beingness shipped off to a mental asylum. Once there, a relationship with an equally crazy suitor, played past Pelting (NINJA ASSASSIN), develops.
The flick has the requisite cuteness and offbeat situations we've come to expect from the manager and from South Korean cinema in general. The entire movie is pretty much set in an aviary, so there's lots of fun from the bizarre antics of the lead'southward young man inmates. Wook's direction is sublime, as ever, and he draws creativity and imagination from each and every scene.
The acting is odd and the characters odder, yet there's then much humour thrown into the mix that this is never a problem. I seem to recall that some of the Jackie Chan ensemble comedies of the 1980s (such as WHEELS ON MEALS and the LUCKY STARS serial) features scenes set in mental hospitals and I'M A CYBORG BUT THAT'Southward OK has much the same vibe equally those movies: packed with free energy, likability and verve and an overall anything-goes mentality. Hardly profound, like some of Wook's other movies, simply a genuine slice of cinematic entertainment.

To be or (ro)bot to be?
Now obviously the English language title of the pic, gives away (kind of) the premise of the pic. Still in that location'due south more than that. The story and the principal characters have a lot of "heart" (pun intended) and fifty-fifty in the more than "cruel" (sometimes literally) sequences, in that location's always something heartfelt going on (even if it's later on those scenes. So it'southward hard not to like the movie.
And it's even harder not to like the characters. They're very sympathetic and we treat them, no matter how "crazy" (once more pun intended) they are! Mr. Park Chan Wook has proved that he can make movies with a theme other than vengeance (although there's a subplot hither ... but we're talking mostly)! Can't look for the side by side 1!

Surreal one-act from Park Chan-wook
Having seen Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy and enjoyed them I was swell to see how he would tackle a more light-hearted film. With this he clearly demonstrates that he is not a ane pull a fast one on pony. Here he manages to brand a film with enough of laughs likewise as some sadness. It would be as well like shooting fish in a barrel for a comedy set in a mental institution to descend into a freak testify where we are invited to laugh at the patients condition but he skilfully avoids that.
We are introduced to the protagonist Cha Young-goon in the opening sequence where she is working in an electronics manufactory, she hears a vocalism telling her what to do and cuts open her arm, pushes wires into the wound, tapes them in place then plugs herself in to the mains. She survives this but as there is conspicuously something wrong she ends upwardly in a mental institution. As she is convinced that she is a cyborg she refuses to eat, instead spending her lunch time holding a bombardment. She grows to believe that her purpose is to kill the doctors there simply her sympathy is preventing her from doing this because of this she forms a friendship with another patient who claims to be a thief who can steal just about anything... if he can steal Thursday surely he tin steal her sympathy. Every bit she isn't eating she is getting weaker and her new friend Park Il-sun is adamant to persuade her to swallow, he does this by giving her a device which he tells her will enable her to eat nutrient.
The flick has many poignant moments as well as several surreal scenes such as those where Young-goon believes she is gunning downward the medical staff at the facility. The actors did a skilful job especially Su-jeong Lim in the lead function who had a strange detached look which was somewhat increased by her blonde eyebrows. With this film Park Chan-wook has clearly demonstrated he tin make light hearted films.... I certainly wasn't expecting him to make a film that featured yodelling.
